1: Smoked pork with sauerkraut and bread dumplings

Smoked pork (Austrian “Geselchtes”) is a cut of pork, usually shoulder, neck, or belly, that has been salted, cured, and then hot-smoked. It’s not fully cooked, but it is preserved and flavored through the smoking process. Before serving, it’s typically simmered for about 45 minutes in water or broth until tender.
My grandmother typically serves it with her creamy sauerkraut and bread dumplings, or with mashed potatoes and pickles. Boiled potatoes and freshly grated horseradish are also great options.

2: Grandma’s Grenadiermarsch (perfect for leftover dumplings)

Grenadiermarsch is a classic leftover dish. It’s the perfect hearty comfort meal for using up leftover smoked pork, bread dumplings, potatoes, or pasta.
3: Grandma’s breaded meat patties with mashed potatoes

Here comes the recipe for incredibly delicious meat patties (“Fleischlaberl”) from my grandma. These take a bit more work than standard recipes, but I promise, it’s absolutely worth it!
4: Stuffed cabbage rolls

Stuffed cabbage rolls, also known as “Krautwickler,” are ideal comfort food for cold days. They reheat well and freeze perfectly, so you can meal prep them and have a quick option during busy weeks.
5: Schinkenfleckerl (Baked ham noodles)

This recipe for traditional baked ham noodles is one of the most popular dishes among my family and relatives.
6: Kaspressknödel (Cheese Dumplings)

This Austrian dumpling recipe makes a wonderfully hearty vegetarian main dish that also freezes well. Kaspressknödel can be served in soup or with salad, sauerkraut, or vegetables.
7: Grandma’s quick paprika chicken

This simple and quick paprika chicken is one of my grandma’s beloved classics, and she often made it for guests.
8: Potato goulash with sausages

In our family, Viennese potato goulash is the classic “after a family gathering” meal (which is cooked, when there are lots of leftover sausages from a party). It cooks quickly and keeps well in the fridge for several days.
9: Cabbage noodles with bacon

Cabbage noodles (“Krautfleckerl”) are the ultimate Austrian soul food and also a very budget-friendly dish. White cabbage is available almost year-round locally. This traditional recipe is slightly sweet and has a strong caraway flavor.
10: Stefaniebraten (stuffed meatloaf)

Stefaniebraten is a true classic of Austrian cuisine - juicy, flavorful, and perfect for cozy family meals or festive occasions. This traditional meatloaf is filled with hard-boiled eggs and pickles, which give it its distinctive taste.
