Ingredients

For 6 servings:

  • 4 large or 6 medium brown onions
  • 3 tablespoon flour
  • 1 teaspoon sweet paprika powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Alternatively, 1-2 teaspoon soup seasoning
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

Peel the onions and cut them into thin rings. In a bowl, mix the flour, paprika powder, salt, and soup seasoning well. Toss the onion rings in the mixture, making sure to separate them so that each ring is fully coated.

Pour about two fingers’ depth of oil into a pan, heat it up, and fry the onions in batches over medium heat until they are perfectly crispy. Let them drain on a paper towel or wire rack.

Tip: Don’t skimp on the oil—without enough, the onions won’t turn crispy.

Austrian Dishes that go well with fried onions

Fried onions are a must with minced meat roasts, such as Stefaniebraten or braised roast beef (Zwiebelrostbraten). They also help grandma's breaded minced patties and mashed potatoes to achieve the perfect taste experience.

Roasted onions can be used creatively as a topping for various dishes, for example in different types of sandwiches, on breads with spreads such as Liptauer, in salads, various purees and vegetarian dishes such as these creamy mushrooms with white beans.

Fried onions are an ideal highlight for potato dishes such as roasted potatoes, parsley potatoes or potato dumplings.
