HOMEMADE AUSTRIAN “KANARIENMILCH” (VANILLA SAUCE)
Here comes a recipe for a very traditional Austrian vanilla sauce called “Kanarienmilch” or “Kanarimilch”. This vanilla sauce is the perfect fit to Austrian Cream Cheese Strudel, Apple Strudel oder Cream Cheese Crepes.

  • 1/2 l milk {2 US cups}
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla sugar or vanilla flavor or 1 vanilla pods
  • 50 g sugar {3-4 tablespoons}
  • 2 egg yolks

  • 1/2 l milk {2 US cups}
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla sugar or vanilla flavor or 1 vanilla pods
  • 50 g sugar {3-4 tablespoons}
  • 2 egg yolks
Instructions
  1. Heat up the milk in a pot.
  2. Add vanilla and sugar and stir until dissolved.
  3. Separate the eggs and beat the egg yolks until creamy.
  4. When the milk is boiling, put away from stove top.
  5. Add the egg yolk bit by bit, while constantly beating with a whisk or hand mixer. Beat until the sauce is frothy.
